This week we wish were in Peru. We’re not swooning over splendid sands this time, but instead pining for Peruvian vistas, and spectacular views!
That’s right – we’re talking about the number 1 Peruvian spot – Machu Picchu, which is located in the Cusco region. So…waking up at 4am to climb to the top of a giant hill doesn’t really sound like something you would wish for, but it is really special and definitely worth it. If you’ve reached the top whilst it’s still dark you are treated to impressive views as the sun rises! You really do wonder what it could have been like to live in such a magical looking place all those years ago. Machu Picchu is believed to have been built as an estate for an Incan emperor in the 15th century, but was abandoned after the Spanish conquest, and today is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
There is also the option of climbing Machu Picchu mountain where you are so high up that Machu Picchu actually looks like a toy town – but this certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted!
If climbing isn’t your thing then there are always the local delicacies to try – don’t miss the Pisco Sour, a wonderfully refreshing cocktail made from Pisco liquor, egg white and citrus juice, or the copious amounts of avocado based dishes you can find (they grow everywhere!) or… the delicious alpaca steak!
