The Nubian Skin Journey – The Start

2nd September 2014

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore–
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over–
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

– Langston Hughes

Rewind four years, and I’m sitting at a desk in a random town in England working on a project I’m not particularly interested in with a manager who for some unknown reason has taken a deep dislike to me. I should be focusing on work, but an idea has popped into my head, and I can’t shake it. Of all the business ideas I’ve come up with, this could be one that really works…it’s also one that I need personally. The biggest issue, I think, is money. I’m not making enough of it at this job, and I’ll need to save A LOT. I’d given up working in finance a few years prior, but all of a sudden it’s starting to look appealing again. Plus, I’ve decided I don’t want to work for a large corporation anymore, so I need to make some changes.

A few months later, I get an email from an old director at my previous employer, she’s now at a boutique firm, would I like to come and interview. It’s a pretty obvious choice, make more money, do more interesting work and leave a job I don’t like. So back to finance I go, but this time knowing that it’s potentially going to help me realise a dream that keeps growing in my mind.

The thing about getting a nice, new, well-paid job is that it makes you comfortable, and it means you can buy nice designer dresses…so, I know I want to start this company, but I’m having a pretty good time where I am, and I think I need to save a few more bonuses, so I push my dream to the back burner for a little while.

It’s the summer of 2012, and I’m in New York for a month for work. I’m with an old friend from university and I start telling her about this idea. She thinks it’s a wonderful idea. We bounce ideas back and forth and I get really excited again. The idea starts to take shape, and I’ve got a skeleton of a business plan, things are going to be great! The idea has a name, Nubian Skin. I love it. It embodies everything I want for this brand. Summer ends, I go back to London, and get stuck into to my job. The rest of the year is insanely busy, so Nubian Skin takes a long nap. My mother keeps asking “What about this business you’re doing?” I reply, “I can’t do everything at once, I’ve got a lot going on”.

It’s now Spring 2013, and Nubian Skin is more in a coma than napping, and then I get a birthday card. It’s from my friend in New York. The front says, “It’s time to start living the life you’ve always imagined.” It’s a wakeup call. I realise it’s now or never. The next day I register the company, buy the domain names and dust off the old business plans. It’s time to spring into action. The Nubian Skin journey has begun.

  4. I am so excited for you and I support this brand 100%. I’ve sent out a mass text to at least a dozen friends about your line so that I could collect their emails and add them to your mailing list. I am also in the process of starting my own business and was recently promoted to manager so I know the struggle of balancing. I wish you prosperity in all of your endeavors and I will be right here shopping!

  5. I’m usually not the type to leave comments but I am truly excited about your line and I’m ready to support!!! Please never stop! I’ll be a customer for life

  6. I love your idea for two reasons. First, you have taken a leap of faith to be in business for yourself.
Secondly, I love nice lingerie and undergarments; so I would love to patronize one of my own.

I do wear a plus size but I hope that the plus sized line will be just as aesthetically pleasing. Also please include shape wear and pajamas, as there is a need for these in complimentary colors as well.

  7. wooo-hooo! i’m so glad for this company! i’ve had the same idea for many years also, but never had any clue how to make it happen, nevermind the finances. i hope to soon be buying many many nubian skin bras and recommending the same for my friends and family. 😀

  8. Thank you for all your kind and encouraging comments. We really appreciate it and hope to continue to grow and cater to more and more customers.

  9. Absolutely love your idea and congratulate you for bringing it to fruition!!! Totally needed product in the marketplace would love to have it here in Hong Kong. We would love to support you in Asia!!!

  10. I’m very excited about this brand. Looking forward to the extended sizes! Sending love and light for your success. Thank you for sharing your story.

  11. Finally our very own coloured under garments.Im as size 12-14,and a cup between 12A-12B.Please its time I wear matching underwears,!! Hooray!,By the way the models on facebook are stunning !! You go girl !!

  12. Well done you! I can’t wait to buy underwear in my own type of nude! When I was an air hostess (many moons ago!) I actually had to argue with management about the pasty ‘flesh coloured’ tights they were insisting I wear! Orange on dark skin was not a good look!

  13. All I can say is FINALLY and YAY!, YAY!, YAY! Just please don’t forget us voluptuous women of color!

Thank you so much – I definitely intend to support you – be sure to come to the USA, Los Angeles!

  14. OMG! Ok, so I saw the article on Yahoo about Nubian Skin and the nude color undergarments for women of color today and decided to look up the company in a quest to purchase- I need the skin color nudes in my life:)! But than I begin reading your story and realized that it was speaking to me! I am currently in a job I don’t really like (great boss and co-workers though) and in the process of working for a larger organization, more pay, bigger position, etc. but my goal is to launch my own business enterprise as well as other projects. Though I have been in constant communication with my lawyer, etc. it is a long and sometimes daunting process that can be discouraging at times. Thank you for sharing your story, I really needed to read this. Thank you also, for creating nudes for us brown girls:) OAN, if you ever need a model, let me know….lol!

  15. It would be great if you could have something like a Demi or Balconette in 38 to 40 JJ all the bras that are in these styles are for smaller thinner girls, I want to be able to wear something other than a t shirt or button up, buttoned up to my neck.

  16. I am so excited about this line because I will finally be able to purchase and wear nude undergarments that match my beautiful brown (caramel) skin tone! Thank you so much!! Will definitely share this on my blog…..www.beenowhining.blogspot.com

  17. Thank – you, thank-you, thank-you. You are me with this concept since 1984. I actually tried to make a go of it in 2004 when my daughter graduated college but problems with Chinese manufacturers I decided to use my walk away power. Will you please continue with this concept so that we will never have to be without nude underwear. The concept was so foreign to all the manufacturers I met over the years. I did not understand why the thought they could ignore a growing segment of the market. The “brbt” in my e-mail address means “Black race Brown tones”. I was told that black underwear was my nude. Thank God the attitudes are changing and minds are opening. Please don’t let go of this concept, add plus sizes and you will be very successful with this venture. Good luck and Hold the Dream.

  18. I am so excited to get a hold of your product. Everything you described about your experience I have shared. I also have to buy my bras and swim suites from a specialty store because of my size (big cup, small torso). I would really be interested in being a part of this if you fanchise.

  19. Hi, congratulations. Just wanted to ask if you would ship internationally? I am in Botswana and would love to place an order once you launch.

  20. Awesome, can’t wait.

Love the brown colors… I’ve always liked brown undergarments!
When I can find them…. Now there will be choices of different shades of brown. I love my own beautiful flawless brown skin.

  21. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR FOLLOWING YOUR DREAM! When you did this, you not only blessed yourself but you’re blessing millions, no billions, of others! In her article in “Yahoo Style”, Lauren Tuck coined a phrase, “For the love of nude!” An old school song by a group called “Slave” immediately came to mind. It’s very sexy and seductive, just like your lingerie. You may want to tweak it a bit and use the music in your commercials. Take a listen…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zRF7BDelVg

  22. I am delighted that you are pursuing your dream! And doubly happy that it is happening in my lifetime. I am mid 60’s and have always told store clerks that their nude and skin tone colors only work for part of the world population – as though they cared or even could do anything about it!! To be able to find pretty underwear in my tone is a dream come true. The world is ready for you and enough women have independent funds to make the timing just right. Things happy for a reason. You are ready and we butterscotch, caramel, mocha and chocolate gals are waiting! Congratulations and God’s blessings on you and all you do!! You just go girl!

  23. YAY!!!!!! But I’m going to need you to go beyond 36DDD-and fast! The girls resting at 40DD are anxiously awaiting your launch.

  24. You don’t have to have darker skin to appreciate these beautiful colors! I am caucasian and love the rich brown tones in the photographs. I think of it as an alternative to black! Looking forward to seeing the styles! Count me in!

  25. So Inspiring…Well Done!!!! One of the best things that could happen in the fashion industry! May this idea take you places… inspired by you, whoever you are. God bless your heart.
