It’s been quite a while since I’ve sat down to write an “Ade’s Diary” entry, but as the five-year anniversary for the launch of Nubian Skin is upon us, it seems like the perfect time to resume. It’s hard to believe five years have gone by. On the one hand, I still feel so new to all of this, and on the other, it seems like 2014 was a lifetime ago. It’s hard to imagine it all kicked off prior to launch with this image of four gorgeous women.
As I look back over the past five years, I have an overwhelming feeling of gratitude. Firstly, I’m so grateful for the support from every single person who has bought from us or spread the word about Nubian Skin. You are the reason why the brand is still going, and I can’t adequately express my appreciation.
A couple of weeks ago, we had a spike in Instagram followers, and I was racking my brain trying to figure out the source. It turns out Remy Ma had taken to her Instagram to shout about our tights! So, in the spirit of appreciation, I wanted to say a big thank you to a special kind of supporter. Nubian Skin is a tiny brand. For our first four years, we did everything with a team of two people + an intern. In our fifth year, that number has grown to four full time and one part time employee. We don’t have the budget for massive PR or marketing, but we have been blessed beyond belief by major celebrities, models and high-profile influencers who have bought our product with their own money or been gifted items and without request or payment have tweeted, posted mentioned and / or tagged us on their platforms. These wonderful women include: Jourdan Dunn, Remy Ma, Jackie Aina, Patricia Bright, Fashion Bomb Daily, Bria Myles, Kerry Washington, Leomie Anderson, Beverley Knight and Thandie Newton.
This doesn’t even touch the many others who have worn our products or put our products in major magazines, films, TV shows, concert tours etc. Not to mention the many, many others who are part of the fabric that make us who we are.
It’s been a mad journey to date, with some highs which I would never have imagined: the two highlights that stand out the most were receiving an MBE for services to Fashion from the Queen and Beyoncé and her dancers wearing our products for the FORMATION tour.
Along the way, there have also been some very low lows, and lessons learned, and the majority of the time it hasn’t been very glamorous, but it’s always felt worth it – and the good has always outweighed the bad.
When Nubian Skin first launched, there really wasn’t much talk of diversity in the lingerie market let alone action towards fixing it. Today, I can confidently say that we’ve had an outsized impact on the industry, especially given our size. That impact is an accomplishment that I will always be proud of for the rest of my life.
Given that many brand are waking up to the need for more skin tones (and I know they are because over the years we have had every major lingerie brand order from us or approach our brand in stealth at trade shows), I am so grateful for the continued support of Nubian Skin customers, and as I look towards the next five years, I have learned so many lessons and look forward to providing you with what you want and need.
As a brand, Nubian Skin is at a turning point of sorts, and I’m excited for the journey ahead. Watch this space for some exciting announcements including a brand new line to be released this month, and a change in the way we plan do business and reach out to our customers over the next few months. One of the things I’m really excited for is using the Nubian Skin platform to shout about amazing women of colour we’re seeing doing great things in their industries, so keep your eyes peeled for our #NubianBeings series.
