A year in the life of Nubian Skin – 2017!

21st December 2017

2017 has been another whirlwind year for us at Nubian Skin! When you have a great year, as we did in 2016, you really don’t know what could possibly top it, but 2017 somehow managed to do just that!

We started with the launch of our beautiful Moroccan Nights collection, that is made in and inspired by Africa. We had a press launch at the Victorian Bathhouse, the same place where we had the photoshoot with YOCF. The spread was Moroccan-inspired, and people were invited to shop the collection. We even heard a few words from our model and muse – Laurence Sessou, her story is super interesting, you should check out our interview with her here.

February was soon upon us and we were over-the-moon to go and see Hidden Figures – the movie where Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae and Taraji P.Henson were wearing Nubian Skin hosiery! We were invited to a private screening organized by the Strong Women Initiative, and we were blown away by the power of the women on screen – what an amazing evening!

Later that month we launched our collaboration with Destiney Bleu, the creator of the amazing D.Bleu.Dazzled line. We are OBSESSED. D.Bleu.Dazzled has been worn by a plethora of celebrities including Rihanna (we’ve all seen that shot of her at Carnival with blue hair and crystal gemmed tights) Beyoncé, Serena Williams and so many more. Basically, anytime you see a celebrity wearing something sparkling with gems, it’s usually been made by d.bleu.dazzled!

We had an amazing launch party at the Sanderson Hotel, where models danced and sparkled the night away in Nubian Skin x D.Bleu.Dazzled, as well as in some of Destiney’s own designs!

February was also the month Ade was featured in the Lancome 40 shades 40 powers campaign. It was great to see such a range of shades on offer! Ade was recognised for her power in ‘innovation’. Can you spot her?

March was a productive month, and we managed to launch our limited-edition shoe collection of leather heels and flats! We did all of the product shots in house and were really pleased with the outcome. We then shot it on body later that month around the Notting Hill/Portobello area.

In May we worked with Nicholle Kobi for her Sprung Tour in London. It’s always such a pleasure to work with other passionate female entrepreneurs. Her art is incredible – definitely check it out if you haven’t already!

In June, it was revealed the Ade had been named on the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for her service to Fashion! We were truly overwhelmed, surprised and excited! The Queen’s birthday honours list recognizes the achievements and contributions of a wide range of extraordinary people across various industries in the UK. The award was made in recognition of Ade’s commitment to her mission to redefine nude through her brand Nubian Skin, and the impact she has consequently made on the fashion industry. On the honour, Ade said: “I really am so humbled and incredibly grateful to be receiving this. It’s not something I could ever have imagined.”

In June we were really excited to be able to work with The Colored Girl for their #FULLBLOOM campaign. They created some seriously stunning imagery, developed around the idea of ‘blossoming black women.’ We loved it! Check out some of the shots, by @islandboiphotography

In July we launched our #mynubianskin campaign, where we worked with some amazing women who we wanted to see embodying our brand’s mission: Empowering Women & Embracing our Colour! We were really proud of this beautiful campaign, check out some of their work and thoughts…

“When you receive your Nubian Skin lace set and feeling yourself! After an intense last couple of months organising #azoouiwa event, I can finally unwind in my favourite lingerie brand! Wearing my single boost lace bra and lace short CINNAMON”
“Nubian Skin’s lingerie was not only comfortable but made me feel sexy, more confident and accentuated the beauty of my melanin!”
“My Nubian Skin makes me feel considered. Selected. Included. Reflected. Having my own shade gives me the sense of enlightenment, which allows me to feel powerful in my own skin & lingerie.”
“Relaxed in my nubian skin”
“I’m so happy businesses like Nubian Skin exist. It truly made me realize the importance of creating awareness on a matter I’m sure some us never gave a second thought to. Now, I’m able to embrace my skin in more ways and look beautiful while doing so.”
“Women of color should embrace their melanin and it all starts with this lingerie set!”
“#Mynubianskin makes me feel strong & confident. I love showing off the beauty my skin color. My shade is Cinnamon.”

THEN… Normandi from Fifth Harmony was wearing Nubian Skin!! Nubian Skin is definitely ready…

In August we were working on our Naked Collection, and in September we had our first ever New York pop-up at the amazing Azaleas in the West Village, it was wonderful to meet so many of our New York customers in person, and help them with the colour match!

One week later and we had our first ever DC pop-up. DC – you were amazing! We were super grateful to Lettie Gooch for hosting us that weekend (which by the way is a fantastic black-owned boutique, so check it out!), and for all of the enthusiastic and excited customers we were able to meet! We will definitely be coming back!!

We officially launched our Naked Collection, a new selection of silhouettes. We were delighted with the imagery, a continued commitment to our mission to empower women and embrace our colour.

At the end of October, Ade received her MBE at Buckingham Palace from HRH Prince William! Speaking about this award, Ade said: “As the owner of a small, independent brand it is an incredible validation of my goal of ‘Empowering Women. Embracing our Colour’ to receive this Honour. I feel so fortunate and am very grateful for all the people who have supported my vision and Nubian Skin and made it what is today.” We were unbelievably proud!

November was a particularly crazy month as everything started happening at once! We had sample sale pop-ups, Black Friday sale, a warehouse move and our Nubian Skin x Smashbox event all in one week!

The Black Friday sale was incredible, we’re so grateful for your continued support and your love for our products (that’s not even half of the boxes). We were selling some of the final pieces of our original collection as there are some more new exciting products coming soon (some that we just know you will LOVE & that you have been asking us for – we have been listening and paying attention!).

The warehouse move was no easy task and full of long days and nights of counting and packing, boxing, unboxing, palletizing and operating a pallet truck like the bad bosses we are! We were doing things we didn’t know we were capable of! We finally moved into our brand new office in central London, we can’t wait to show you it soon!

We were incredibly excited to work with Smashbox Studios for our ‘Find Your Nude’ event with The Naked Collection. Guests were able to find their colour match both in the Smashbox Studio Skin Foundation and also in Nubian Skin products! We also had a makeup masterclass and guests received a super-cool 3D printed Nubian Skin kiss lipstick – love it!

At the start of December, Ade travelled to LA to receive her second honour of the year – being named as an Entrepreneur in the EBONY 100 Power List, amongst some other impressive and powerful names! Another accolade for Ade! She also hosted a bloggers brunch where she introduced some incredible women to the brand’s products.

We ended the year with a brand new photoshoot…. Who’s ready to see what’s coming next?!
